Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Appoints 2 New Members to the IOLTA Committee

Attorneys Lauren G. Barnes and Margaret J. Hurley have been appointed by the Supreme Judicial Court to serve initial three-year terms on the Massachusetts Interest on Lawyers’ Trust Accounts (IOLTA) Committee.

The IOLTA Committee uses the interest on attorneys’ bank accounts holding client funds along with cy pres awards in class action lawsuits and certain court and attorney registration fees to provide funding for civil legal services for low-income clients and access to justice initiatives throughout the Commonwealth.

Lauren G. Barnes

Barnes is a partner at Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP in Cambridge, where her practice focuses primarily on antitrust violations in the healthcare industry, seeking remedies on behalf of classes of purchasers. Barnes is a representative of the Boston Bar Foundation.

Margaret J. Hurley

Hurley serves as the Chief of the Attorney General’s Central Massachusetts Division, located in Worcester, and is also the Director of the Municipal Law Unit. Hurley is a representative of the Massachusetts Bar Foundation.

Mala M. Rafik

The SJC also appointed Mala M. Rafik, a partner at Rosenfeld & Rafik, P.C. in Boston, to a second term on the IOLTA Committee as a representative of the Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation.

All three terms end on January 1, 2025.
